404s and what EasyShop can do for you.
404s could be bad for e-commerce sites. See what solutions EasyShop offers
This week Get Elastic and Google are discussing the problem of 404s (page not found error) related to SEO and give some hints about solutions. In short: Get Elastic recommends permanent redirects (301) and Google prefers more useful 404 pages (but also consider redirects as a good solution if they make sense for the shop customers). It may be of interest that EasyShop (via Plone) comes with smart solutions for both ways:
-
Automatic redirects if an object's url has been changed
Whenever an object's url has been changed a mapping from old url to new url is stored automatically. If an user (or a bot) tries to visit an old url, she is automatically redirect (permanently) to the new url. Additionally the shop owner can manually add and remove mappings from old to new urls.
-
Display parent object, similar urls and a search field
If no new url can be found, the search result lists the parent object, similar urls and a search field.

In addition there are some approaches to prevent broken links:
-
Categories' urls don't change at all if they are reorganized
Categories are logically nested - not physically. That means you can reorganize your categories without changing the url at all.
-
Warnings if you break links
EasyShop warns you if you are about to break existing links (by deleting an object)
